VOICES FROM THE PANDEMIC by Eli Saslow is a book I thought I would never read。 At least not in another year。 We all went through a world-shattering event that affected everyone。 A historical event that is not over yet。I am so heartbroken that I got older not living the past (almost) two years and this book made me go through different emotions over and over。Eli Saslow traveled around to talk to different people and pen their stories and experiences。 True stories of pain and hope。The author has m VOICES FROM THE PANDEMIC by Eli Saslow is a book I thought I would never read。 At least not in another year。 We all went through a world-shattering event that affected everyone。 A historical event that is not over yet。I am so heartbroken that I got older not living the past (almost) two years and this book made me go through different emotions over and over。Eli Saslow traveled around to talk to different people and pen their stories and experiences。 True stories of pain and hope。The author has masterfully interviewed people and documented their unimaginable experiences and he has brilliantly chosen stories from all across America that give the readers a glimpse of what people in different places went through。There are 27 individual stories from March 2020 to early 2021。 Stories from restaurateur, first responders to those lost their jobs。 Stories that break your heart, heal you and make you feel grateful at the same time。This is not an easy book to read, however if you start reading it you won't be able to stopMany thanks to Doubleday Books for this gifted copy。 。。。more

Voices from the Pandemic ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️*thank you @doubledaybooks for the #gifted copy in exchange for an honest review*I finished reading this book last night and I can’t stop thinking about the stories that I read。 A cross-section of Americans and their experiences in real time is what fills this book。 We hear from an exhausted and underpaid EMT in NYC, a grocery store owner feeding his neighborhood for free, an overwhelmed coroner, nurses, teachers, citizens and patients。 During the pandemic I wa Voices from the Pandemic ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️*thank you @doubledaybooks for the #gifted copy in exchange for an honest review*I finished reading this book last night and I can’t stop thinking about the stories that I read。 A cross-section of Americans and their experiences in real time is what fills this book。 We hear from an exhausted and underpaid EMT in NYC, a grocery store owner feeding his neighborhood for free, an overwhelmed coroner, nurses, teachers, citizens and patients。 During the pandemic I was watching the news like probably everyone else, but I didn’t hear these types of stories。 It’s surreal to read this while the pandemic is still going on, and I can imagine in 20 years from now kids will be amazed to read this and hear of the crazy stories of the pandemic。 There’s really no words to describe how important this literature is。 I’m sure in 100 years the textbooks will include a short chapter about the coronavirus pandemic, and stories like this should be included。In reference to reading this book, it’s easily laid out in short chapters packed with emotion。 I can’t recommend this book enough, but read it when you’re in a good place。 I thought reading about the pandemic would have been fine but there were some stories that made me cry and need to stop reading for a few hours。 Take care of yourself 🖤Thank you, Eli Saslow for writing such an important story。 。。。more

Eli Saslow is unmatched when it comes to conveying human emotion。 I was blown away with his work in 𝑅𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑂𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐻𝑎𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑑, and his latest, 𝑽𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒄 is no exception。 This masterpiece was all at once raw and empathetic, gut-wrenching and resilient。 He shares the human experience like no other。 I just couldn't put this book down。 Each of the stories of personal experience throughout the pandemic were so compelling, especially because they're part of our shared journey。I'll admit, I s Eli Saslow is unmatched when it comes to conveying human emotion。 I was blown away with his work in 𝑅𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑂𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐻𝑎𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑑, and his latest, 𝑽𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒄 is no exception。 This masterpiece was all at once raw and empathetic, gut-wrenching and resilient。 He shares the human experience like no other。 I just couldn't put this book down。 Each of the stories of personal experience throughout the pandemic were so compelling, especially because they're part of our shared journey。I'll admit, I shed a few tears, but I relished every bit of it。 I'm the type that has to go through the emotions to heal, and this book was so incredibly cathartic。 Whether you're still struggling with all that Covid has changed in our lives, unsure of where you stand with it all, or just feeling gratitude for all that you've learned from the experience, I highly recommend this collection of stories。 They will move you and give you a deeper understanding of what we have endured as a nation。 And what a book to share with future generations。。。Anne at Penguin Random House, I just cannot thank you enough for reaching out to me with this advanced reader's copy。 It is truly one of my most treasured reads of 2021。Check out more of my reviews on my blog at mamasgottaread。blogspot。com or follow me on Instagram @mamasgottaread ! 。。。more

Many thanks to NetGalley and Doubleday Books for gifting me a digital ARC of this amazing story compilation by Pulitzer Prize winner journalist, Eli Saslow - 5 stars。This is the story of our country's battle against the Covid-19 pandemic, told through the voices of a cross-section of people。 We read about the struggles of the doctors and nurses on the front line, those struggling to breathe, the school personnel faced with no-win situations。 Since everything coincided to make this fight so polit Many thanks to NetGalley and Doubleday Books for gifting me a digital ARC of this amazing story compilation by Pulitzer Prize winner journalist, Eli Saslow - 5 stars。This is the story of our country's battle against the Covid-19 pandemic, told through the voices of a cross-section of people。 We read about the struggles of the doctors and nurses on the front line, those struggling to breathe, the school personnel faced with no-win situations。 Since everything coincided to make this fight so political, we also get both sides of the battle - the people being evicted from their apartments and the landlords evicting them。 The deniers, the believers。This is a vitally important look back over this pandemic from the beginning to the vaccines, from despair to hope。 Of course, the story isn't over as we struggle with variants and mandates, but this is a book that should be read by everyone。 Highly recommended! 。。。more

Wow! The stories in this book are as horrific as they are inspirational and raw。 Mr。 Saslow, through these interviews, manages to capture multiple points of view from a wide range of people。 At times I found myself angry and emotional while reading the stories included in the book。 But I was also in awe of the courage it took many to tell their stories, knowing that whichever side of the fence they fall they would be opening themselves up to persecution and scorn。 I'm sorry to say I'm not famili Wow! Today is a bit different at The Gilmore Guide。 You’re here to read book reviews, not me pontificating on topics you may not care about。 By and large I try and stick to that format。 But if you’ve been a longtime supporter of this blog or you know me at all, you have some sense of my views on any number of subjects so this review and my thoughts on Voices from the Pandemic won’t come as a surprise。 If you’re not in the mood for opinion, probably best to skip this。I was hesitant to read Voices from Today is a bit different at The Gilmore Guide。 You’re here to read book reviews, not me pontificating on topics you may not care about。 By and large I try and stick to that format。 But if you’ve been a longtime supporter of this blog or you know me at all, you have some sense of my views on any number of subjects so this review and my thoughts on Voices from the Pandemic won’t come as a surprise。 If you’re not in the mood for opinion, probably best to skip this。I was hesitant to read Voices from the Pandemic because unlike other historical books we are still in the midst of this crisis。 Eli Saslow is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who spent 2020 interviewing people around the country about their COVID experiences。 In the book he shares over 30 individual stories beginning in March and ending in January 2021。 This timeline encompasses the 2020 election, further heightening emotions。 As a journalist Salow presents all sides of the last 18 months。 This is not a partisan COVID or election echo chamber。Voices from the Pandemic is not easy reading。 It’s emotionally brutal。 Whether it’s a grocer in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans who starts tabs because his customers no longer have jobs or cars and the buses aren’t running and he’s the only grocer for miles。 Or an anesthesiologist who normally works in the delivery room, but is now intubating multiple people in a shift, despite having a pre-existing condition himself。 It’s the loved ones left behind, an elderly woman who watches herself go from caring to vitriol…the stories just keep coming。 There are those who firmly believe COVID is a hoax to discredit their president because no one they know gets it。 Or an Arizona man who rallies people on Facebook to go into stores in groups to harass shoppers wearing masks because they go against his Constitutional rights。 There’s a North Carolina retail clerk who is spit on and harassed for trying to enforce the state mandate to wear masks。 A coroner in a rural county in Georgia who personally knows 30 of the dead, including six preachers。 A man who loses his family’s restaurant due to the shutdown and questions its effectiveness。The rest of this review is at The Gilmore Guide to Books: https://gilmoreguidetobooks。com/2021/。。。 。。。more

This is a intriguing read that will stand the test of times and one day be a piece of history more valuable than anything you remember。 It tells the accounts of living through the COVID-19 Pandemic through the eyes and the stories of many that lived in fear, risked their lives, struggled to survive after being afflicted and so many more。 It literally chills you recounting the moments when we first became aware, had to wear masks and go on lockdown。 It tells of loss of jobs, businesses and life。 This is a intriguing read that will stand the test of times and one day be a piece of history more valuable than anything you remember。 It tells the accounts of living through the COVID-19 Pandemic through the eyes and the stories of many that lived in fear, risked their lives, struggled to survive after being afflicted and so many more。 It literally chills you recounting the moments when we first became aware, had to wear masks and go on lockdown。 It tells of loss of jobs, businesses and life。 It is a book that would be an excellent resource to reread and pass on to decades to come。 Don’t miss these firsthand accounts from real people that lived the Pandemic and have stories you will want to remember and keep in your heart forever。 。。。more

The author is a Pulitzer Prize winner and it shows in this book。 During Covid 19 he spoke to people all over the world from all walks of life and the conversations are in the book。 It reminded me that we were all in this together even though the mismanagement of the pandemic threatened to tear us apart。 Everyone suffered in one way or another。I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。

Eli Saslow is one of the best at explaining things。 Traveling around gathering data but also stories of people’s experiences。 Some painful, some hopeful, but all true。Covid-19 snuck up on all of us while we were paying attention to the antics of the administration。 And from the start, Mr。 Saslow started talking to Americans all over。 From all walks of life。 This book is the culmination of all of those conversations。 From the exhausted health workers to the unemployed facing hardships, his storie Eli Saslow is one of the best at explaining things。 Traveling around gathering data but also stories of people’s experiences。 Some painful, some hopeful, but all true。Covid-19 snuck up on all of us while we were paying attention to the antics of the administration。 And from the start, Mr。 Saslow started talking to Americans all over。 From all walks of life。 This book is the culmination of all of those conversations。 From the exhausted health workers to the unemployed facing hardships, his stories are heartbreaking。What are a teacher’s responsibilities to her students versus her family? How about the people who still think it is a hoax, even on their deathbeds。 This pandemic has pitted us against each other。 Family members and friends fall by the wayside if they aren’t vaccinated。Where do we draw a line? The accounts in this book are real and their stories will make you think, cry, and feel just as helpless as the rest of us。 I did a lot of crying over this one and I needed that。Always a pleasure。NetGalley/Doubleday 28 September 2021 。。。more

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion。 Wow! The stories told in this book really touched my heart。 I am an ICU RN, so I am no stranger to the horrors of COVID。 The surge in December, January and February, was horrific。 I’ve been a nurse for 29 years and have never seen anything like it。 Taking care of more patients then we should have, so many people dying despite all of our best efforts。 Like some of the people in these stories, many of us are suffering I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion。 Wow! Wow--this book is a stand out! Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Eli Saslow spent hundreds of hours interviewing people during the COVID-19 pandemic about their many, varied experiences。 He features many of these interviews in this book。 As someone living in rural Minnesota, it was eye opening to see what people in different places went through。 I stayed up way too late reading this and devoured it in two nights。 Highly readable。
